Frequently Asked Questions

What is the youngest you can start training?

Tipycally 3 years of age, and as long as the student is potty-trained.  You should schedule an assesment first to verify

What is the meaning of the uniform colors?

White uniforms are for students between belts white-Orange/Purple.  This symbolizes all beginners.  After Purple Belt you are assigned a Black Uniform which symbolizes students that are either intermediate or advanced.

What is the meaning of the belts?

Belt colors have different meanings.  White symbolizes nothingness, Yellow and Orange are the rising and setting sun, usually your first “day” in the martial arts.  Purple is the night, blue and blue/green symbolize water and fluidity.  Green and green/brown symbolize the earth and the plants that grow.  Brown symbolizes the ground and Black is the combination of all light colors, and it means you have achieved all the basic tools you need for martial arts training.

What do you need to get started?

Usually a uniform and just the willingness to train. After a few months you will need sparring gear for training, and once you have achieved certain levels you might need other tools such as your own weapons for training.  Speak to your instructor first before acquiring any of these.

Can I do martial arts just for a summer / season?

Martial Arts, unlike other sports is not practiced by “seasons”.  It is a lifestyle and thus we expect you to continue your training for as long as you can.  However, your training is up to you and your instructor.  Speak to your instructors first about your plans so they can develop a training program for you.

Is this like other schools?

This academy works the same as other private schools.  There are set schedules, uniforms, rules, guidelines, teachers, students and a curriculum we follow.  We suggest you speak to an instructor before fully enrolling into the studio so we can understand your goals.  Obtaining a rank with our studio means you will be recognized with multiple international martial arts organizations.  We take our training seriously and we expect you do too.

How often do I change belts?

Typically it depends on Attendace, Ability, and Attitude.  If you start about 3 or 4 years of age you will attain your Black Belt at about 13 – 15 years of age.  It is similar to goin through K-12.  If you start as an adult you will typically obtain a Black Belt after about 4-5 years (similar to college).   This depends on you.

Can I test out the studio first before committing to training?

Yes and No.  Yes, we do have trial offers for a day, a week, and a couple of weeks you can use at any time, but in order to truly learn Martial Arts you cannot just practice for a few days.  To fully benefit from the program you must commit to at least 6 months of training.  We suggest you consider this before you start your program. Have a clear goal in mind and ask the assistance of your instructor to get into it.

How do payments work?

This works the same as a gym membership.  You pay for continued membership and your instructor ALWAYS assumes you will be coming to class.  It is up to you to continue your martial arts routine.  However, if you do desire to stop you must present a 30-day notice in writting and pay your last month tution installment before stopping.  We do not cancel for non-attendance, we don’t take phone calls, or conversations with “someone” at the studio.  A 30-day cancellation form can be requested at any time, but you should always talk to your instructor before stopping.

Payments can be made by week, by month, or prepaid.

How much are classes?

That depends, but our most common programs are: $35 p/week for 2 group classes per week, $45 p/week for unlimited group sessions, and $55 p/week for personal and group sessions.

Are there discounts?

Yes, we do have discounts for seniors, siblings, and military personnel.  Speak to your instructor for details.

Do you pay for testing?

Yes.  Testing does have pricing and this pricing increases the higher the test.  From $75 for a Yellow Belt Test, to $500 for a Black Belt Test.  However, testing doesn’t happen often, only when you ar ready.  So talk to your instructor first about planning for your test.

Are there any other fees?

You pay only for membership, testing, and any gear you may need, nothing else.

Can I add or take lessons away?

Yes, which will change your membership.  So please speak to the Studio Manager if you need to make changes to your membership.
